Turtle Derby on the Delta

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a turtle derby?
It’s an exciting family-friendly event where participants “adopt” a turtle for $5 each. The turtles are numbered and the participant receives adoption papers with the number of their turtle listed on it. One thousand turtles are released into a waterway where they race to the finish line. The first place winner receives a fabulous prize and there are additional prizes for the next several winners.

When and where will the event be held?
Turtle Derby on the Delta will be held on Sunday, September 19, 2010, from at Five Rivers Delta Resource Center on the Mobile Bay Causeway. Last minute turtle adoptions will be held from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm on race day. The race will start at 4:30 pm and the winners will be announced following the race.

Do I need to be present to win?
No, but why miss all the fun! The winners of the turtle derby will be posted on the event website. However, all winners will be notified within 14 days and prizes will need to be picked up within that time period.

Do I get to keep my turtle?
No. Race volunteers will collect the turtles at the end of the race so the turtles can begin training for next year.

Where do the proceeds go?
The proceeds benefit Covenant Hospice patient and family services in Mobile County. Through fundraisers like the Turtle Derby, Covenant Hospice is able to provide care for patients regardless of ability to pay.
