After retiring from being in business with her husband, Sam, for 40 years, Joyce Goldenberg looked into volunteering for various local nonprofits. Taking the advice of a friend, Joyce attended a volunteer training program with Covenant Hospice and enjoyed her training so much that she decided to become a new patient and family volunteer. “I did not know anything about hospice at first, but I learned about caring for the sick and elderly early on from my mother and my grandmother,” she says. When Joyce heard that Covenant Hospice was building an inpatient residence, she knew that she had to be a part of it. In the spring of 1992, Joyce became the first volunteer at the new residence. Throughout the years, Joyce has grown attached to many patients and experienced the pain of loss when they passed away. “I loved them all,” she says of the patients she has cared for. Even though these patients have moved on, Joyce remembers their stories clearly, and a smile appears on her face as she looks back. You can read more about Joyce's Contributions in the Faces of Life book.
