They say that a dog is a man’s best friend. That certainly held true for Wilmer Knighton. Wilmer grew up around farming, animals, and the outdoors. He worked on the family farm in Bluffton, Georgia, with his six siblings. He later bought a little land here and there for cattle farming after his time in the Army during World War II. Wilmer was an expert on cattle. People in the community would always come to him with questions or problems they were having with their cattle. They knew that Wilmer was honest and would always give them the right advice. Wilmer always told his son, Jim, that no matter how little a person had, he could work and have a good name. For Wilmer, nothing was more important than a person’s good name. In 2001, Wilmer moved to Jim’s farm in Cowarts, Alabama. Wilmer had lost his wife in 1985 and retired from farming, so he spent his days with his constant companion, a terrier named Bud. Those two loved each other and were often found on the porch swing together. You can read more about Wilmer's Bud in the Faces of Life book.
